One of our favorite beaches in Ecuador is Olon. It’s beautiful long beach on the West Coast of Ecuador. Water temperature is 81 degrees and yes it literally feels like bath water. You never get cold on these beaches. The gentle waves that kiss the golden sand are perfect for boogie boarding or learning to surf.
There are several small locally owned hotels in town that range from $30 to $60 a night. Our favorite is the Marisposa Inn owned by 2 Italians. It is quiet and they turn away any potential late night partiers looking for rooms. An evening shower and the fan in the room were sufficient in the room to keep us cool.

We rented a long board for $10 for the day and after a short surf lesson from locals our kids were up in no time. Seeing how easy it was I had to give it a try. I have done some boogey boarding but never surfed. Surprisingly it was not too hard on the small waves but I quickly could tell I was out of my league when I tried to take a bigger wave and was quickly humbled when hit over the head taking a tail fin right above my right eye. Now I had something to write home about to mom.
Time to learn to surf kids……
"Dad I got this!"
And then there was Dad who took a fin to the head…Ouch!
Lunch in Montanitas
There's nothing like a picture of pineapple smoothie to bring out your inner pirate!
Most restuarants have a daily lunch special that costs between $3 to $5 and includes soup, main dish, and a drink. If you are in the mood for seafood there is plenty of fresh options to choose from(prices are USD)
IL PIRATA PIZZERIA is one of our favorites in Olon. The owners are from Italy and they make an excellent pizza from scratch.
Daddy! Come out and Play!
